Severe Weather Planning Moves Back Onto the Salon Insurance Checklist

Why property, equipment and interruption cover deserve attention before the next major event

Recent insurance industry commentary has again placed severe weather preparation on the agenda for Australian small businesses.
For beauty salons, skin clinics, nail studios and mobile beauticians, the message is practical: storms, heavy rain, flash flooding and power disruption can affect a beauty business long before a claim becomes a major catastrophe.

Beauty operators often think first about client injury risks, allergic reactions or treatment-related complaints. Those exposures remain important, but weather-related disruption can quickly create a different set of pressures. Water entering a premises can damage treatment beds, electrical devices, stock, flooring, cabinetry and point-of-sale systems. Even a short closure can lead to cancelled appointments, lost retail sales and staff rostering issues.

This is where the detail of a policy matters. Contents cover may respond differently depending on the cause of damage, the items insured and any exclusions or sub-limits. Business interruption cover may also depend on whether there has been insured physical damage, how the indemnity period is set and what evidence is available to support lost income. Salon owners should not assume that every storm-related setback is automatically covered in the same way.

A useful starting point is to walk through the premises as if a claim had just happened. What would need to be repaired, replaced, cleaned, tested or rebooked before trading could restart? Consider treatment equipment, professional stock, retail products, signage, glass, fit-out, data systems and portable tools used by staff or contractors. If those values have increased since the last renewal, the business may need to estimate practical insurance levels again rather than relying on old figures.

Risk reduction can also support smoother claims discussions. Keep photos of key equipment, maintain purchase records, store important documents digitally, and review drainage, roof leaks, electrical safety and stock storage before storm season. Mobile beauticians should also think about equipment in transit, storage at home and how appointments would be managed if roads, venues or client homes were temporarily inaccessible.

For salons in leased premises, it is worth checking where the landlord's responsibility ends and the tenant's begins. Building repairs, glass, fixtures, improvements and external signage can sit in different places depending on the lease and insurance arrangements. That distinction can become important after property damage.

The broader lesson is not to panic about weather risk, but to make cover match the way the business actually operates. A current asset list, realistic interruption period and clear understanding of policy limits can give beauty professionals more confidence if severe weather interrupts trade.
